An Insect Alphabet (Special Edition)
An Insect Alphabet is a celebration of the wild and wacky world of insects – their strange, exotic forms and the wonderful names people have given them. Insects were alive nearly three hundred million years before fly-spray and ants alone weigh more than all other life put together. There are a billion insects in every acre; this book features twenty-six of them.
From the microscopic to the truly enormous, the huge variety of insect life is recorded in stunning linocuts. The text is a vibrant celebration of the place insects have inhabited in our language. Whether showing an argument of angry ants, a groan of grumpy gnats or a tower of tormented termites, the images are constantly inventive. All show the mastery of linocutting achieved by Melanie Wickham.
Melanie Wickham took a BA in illustration at the University of the West of England and is currently undertaking a post-graduate course in Arts Management at the University of Sussex. Her previous highly successful book, ‘Cat’, was produced in association with MakingSpace Publications in Bristol. Her work is held in the collections of both the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the New York Public Library. She grew up in the countryside, surrounded by flies, but only learned to love insects when her sister was stung in the mouth by a wasp. She has a large collection of plastic insects, started while working at Bristol Zoo in the holidays while a student.
David Bailey took a BA in Animal Biology at the University of Oxford where he specialised in Entomology. He still has a large collection of dung beetles in his attic to prove it. As well as writing the text for An Insect Alphabet, he is a founding partner of the Avenue Press.
